Years ago, when I was in the restaurant business, I had partners who were stealing from me. I asked them to see the financials, and they refused. After, my attorney sent them a demand letter to show me the financials, they offered to buy me out. They offered me $100,000 but I knew the value was four times that. When I countered their offer, they said take it or leave it!
I didn’t want to fight and waste my energy in a legal dispute, so I took it and moved from Atlanta to Jacksonville, Florida with my new job, wife and two little children. After losing my job during the dot.com crash I had to figure out how I was going to support my family and pay the bills.
I decided to open up a Moe’s Southwest Grill franchise, which was the first in Florida. I second mortgaged my home and put the $100,000 my partners gave me and opened up the restaurant. It was a difficult, stressful time filled with many battles and much adversity. I was able to persevere and eventually opened three more restaurants which I sold in 2005 for seven figures while my former partner’s restaurant closed.
When I sold my Moes it turned out my managing partner who oversaw the operations was not paying the bills to my produce supplier. A few months after the sale I got a bill for $80,000 of produce that hadn’t been paid. I could have fought this and went after my managing partner but decided to pay the bill and move on. I wanted to focus on writing and speaking. While writing that unexpected big check for the produce was painful, I knew it was the right thing to do and it freed me up mentally to pursue my mission and dream.
Twenty years later I realize that one of the key reasons why I have been able to write 32 books, travel to countless cities, speak at thousands of events and impact millions of people is because I didn’t get stuck fighting old battles. Instead, I moved forward and utilized all my energy to fight new battles and create new victories.
It’s a major life lesson I want to share with you because too often you get stuck fighting old battles and then you don’t have the energy or focus to fight new battles that will lead to new victories and better outcomes.
Don’t waste your energy fighting battles that keep you stuck in the past. Let it go. Shake it off. Take the lesson and move on. Decide what you want to create now. Choose to move forward. Maximize your energy and focus so you can win new battles and experience new victories.
Doing this led me to turn six figures into seven figures and the pursuit of my mission and dream and I know it will it will lead you to experience exponential growth and take you to a higher level!
