Gordon is actually my Mom’s maiden name and after college my older brother and I changed our last name to honor her and our grandparents who were very committed to us.
I have always taken great pride in the Gordon name but it means even more on Memorial Day.
My grandfather, Martin Gordon, served in World War II. During D-Day he was shot while storming the beaches of Normandy. His best friend was killed beside him and fell on him, ultimately saving his life. Somehow my grandfather survived while his entire battalion did not.
My mom had not yet been born yet. If my grandfather didn’t survive, I wouldn’t exist.
My grandfathers best friend saved his life and made mine possible.
I have a truly grateful heart for all who have served and sacrificed for our country. We have because they gave! In many cases we owe our very lives to those who lost theirs.
So if you have a family member who served and sacrificed I want to say thank you and recognize their commitment and yours.
Thinking about my Grandpa Gordon and his commitment, he wasn’t just committed to his country. He was also committed to his family and me.
A few days before he passed away from a heart attack he came to my little league baseball game. I’ll never forget him showing up and being there. That was the last time I saw him. My last memory was his commitment to me.
My last memory of my mom who passed away 19 years ago was her commitment to me.
My grandfather was committed!
My grandmother was committed.
My mom was committed.
Every day I live with Gordon as my last name I am recognizing their commitment and every day I commit to others their commitment lives on through me.
In the spirit of Memorial Day let’s recognize all those who committed to us and keep their commitment alive by committing to others.
Doing this will ensure that their commitment never dies!
