A year ago while appearing on a Philadelphia television morning show I met Gary Marshall, the Hollywood movie director... and a wonderful guy. Then, a few months ago, out of the blue, I received a call from Gary's production team. Turns out they used my Silent Energy audio CD in a funny scene in the new movie Georgia Rule, staring Jane Fonda, Felicity Huffman and Lindsey Lohan. In order to use my voice in this scene they needed my approval and so they emailed me the video clip to watch it.

Now, after watching this clip you may be thinking, "Why did Jon let himself get thrown out the window like that?" :) For me the answer is pretty simple...

One, I don't take myself too seriously. Two, who hasn't been in a situation like Felicity Huffman's character? Who hasn't been so upset and frustrated with life that they weren't ready or willing to benefit from something that could help them? Who hasn't been stressed to the point where they weren't ready or able to take control of their emotions?

I remember a point in my life where I was an emotional train wreck. I remember not being willing to take control of my emotions or responsibility for my life. I thought all my problems, all my challenges and all my frustrations were everyone else's fault. My life and career were in the toilet. If I were listening to my own CD back then I probably would have done the same thing. Yet, over the years I have learned that in order to change direction we must be willing to take the wheel of our bus. We must realize that we have the power to choose our attitude, which helps determine the kind of ride it's going to be. We must understand that the very things we want to throw out the window are often what we need the most.

So, if you are having problems at work or home or find yourself blaming others for your situation I encourage you to stop trying to drive everyone else's bus and first take the wheel of your own bus. Believe me, I've tried to drive my wife's bus in the past and I know this doesn't work. :) We can only drive our bus.

Take the wheel and take responsibility for the choices in your life. Decide the kind of energy you want to share with your employees, customers, co-workers and family. Take control of your emotions and decide the energy you want coursing through your body- positive or negative emotions. Be willing to change. Be open to receiving fuel and positive energy from others. Don't turn your back on the things that can enhance your life. And if you ever get the urge to throw a perfectly good CD out the window... no matter how stressed you are... please don't. :) What you may not be ready for today may have a big impact on you tomorrow!
